Sustainability in construction: carbon border adjustment mechanism

23 January 2025 , Webinar Add to calendar

Join us to learn more about the implementation of a UK carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) at this webinar developed by CIRIA’s Driving Net Zero Carbon Community of Practice in collaboration with BOS.

Background
CBAM imposes a carbon tariff on some of the most emissions intensive industrial goods imports that are at high risk of carbon leakage to align with ambitious climate goals. Initially targeting sectors like cement, steel, and electricity, CBAM is a crucial step towards a sustainable future.
Industries like construction, known for high emissions, play a pivotal role. CBAM ensures that imported construction materials meet eco-friendly standards, contributing to carbon reduction targets.

The UK Government recently published its response to a policy design consultation held earlier this year on the introduction of a UK CBAM, and confirms it will implemented on 1 January 2027. The response outlines the design and administration of the CBAM, which will apply to five sectors (aluminium, cement, fertiliser, hydrogen, and iron and steel). Products from the glass and ceramics sectors will not be in scope of the UK CBAM from 2027. The sectoral scope of the UK CBAM will be kept under review beyond 2027.

In the EU, the CBAM transitional phase is from 2023-2025 and it will apply in its definitive regime from 2026.

This webinar will outline CBAM requirements and emissions reporting for imports to the UK and exports to the EU. Practical case studies will illustrate how the construction sector is embracing sustainability and preparing for CBAM to build a greener future.
