New member: HEMSPAN

We are thrilled to share exciting news from the forefront of sustainable construction! BIOHAUS®, from our new member HEMSPAN have created an innovative bio-based MMC CAT 2 panellised building system, this has achieved a significant milestone by securing accreditation from BOPAS (BuildOffsite Property Assurance Scheme) for buildings up to three storeys. This prestigious endorsement reaffirms BIOHAUS®’s position at the pinnacle of industry standards for robustness and durability in construction. Moreover, it opens doors for future development opportunities, potentially expanding the system’s application to buildings up to five storeys or 18 metres high.
BIOHAUS® represents more than just a building system; it embodies a scalable, climate-positive solution that sets new benchmarks in sustainable living environments. By utilizing the whole hemp plant, alongside structural timber and advanced MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) technologies, BIOHAUS® not only delivers exceptional thermal efficiency and acoustic properties but also achieves carbon-negative construction and surplus energy outcomes.
Key Features of BIOHAUS®:
  • Comprehensive 2-hour fire performance.
  • U-VALUE: 0.100W/m²K, showcasing exceptional thermal efficiency.
  • Utilization of the whole hemp plant for structural integrity and sustainability.
Matthew Belcher, Founder and CEO of HEMSPAN Ltd, expressed gratitude to their partners and stakeholders, acknowledging their pivotal role in advancing BIOHAUS® towards a sustainable future. “We would like to thank our partners, APPLY and Tecbüro AT Ltd, our incredibly supportive shareholders, and the whole team who have taken us one step closer to growing the buildings of the future!” Belcher stated.
Anthony Pearce, Co-Founder and MD of Apply Structure Ltd, welcomed HEMSPAN’s achievement, emphasising the alignment of their missions in promoting bio-based building technologies and circular systems. “The vision and leadership shown by Matt and all the Hemspan team to drive bio-based building technologies and circular systems to enable mass adoption of carbon-negative living is consistent with APPLY’s own mission to deliver better homes for more people,” Pearce remarked.
As we celebrate this milestone, let’s continue to push the boundaries of sustainable construction and foster innovation in the built environment. The accreditation of BIOHAUS® by BOPAS underscores its role as a catalyst for change, driving us towards a greener, more sustainable future.
