Join us for a visit to the construction site of Britain’s newest ‘smart’ prison, HMP Millsike, designed to house over 1,400 inmates which is being built by Kier opposite the existing HMP Full Sutton.
Background
The Ministry of Justice is benefitting from improvements implemented by the construction partners in the New Prisons Programme with HMP Millsike, the third establishment, now being built beside HMP Full Sutton in East Yorkshire.
Building work started last Autumn on the cutting-edge jail which will open in 2025. Designed with security and rehabilitation in mind, the new Category C prison will be equipped with the latest smart technology.
It will also be the first new prison to operate as zero-carbon in the future, with an all-electric design, solar panels, heat pumps and more efficient lighting systems to reduce energy demand significantly.
One of the initiatives Kier is undertaking is the tagging and tracking of pre-cast components, to reduce carbon emissions, improve quality, and simplify valuations. This has the potential to deliver benefits across the entire construction sector and it is one of topics Kier will speak about when Buildoffsite visits the construction site in April.
